performancemanagementaligning employees, organisations and managers

Performance Management is said by many to lie at the heart of developing a progressive, successful organisation, but few often understand what it is actually is, or more importantly, how to deliver it in their own organisation.

"performance management is now a sophisticated and powerful tool that can’t be separated from other management systems. In successful companies, it enables line managers to exercise their people management responsibilities effectively and get the best from the people they manage."  CIPD 2005 - Performance Management Report September 2005

In simple terms performance management, or a performance management process is designed around a series of core objectives:

Linking organisations, department or team objectives to the actions of individuals
Defining and communicating the objectives that employees are expected to perform
Developing employees to enable them to meet those goals
Constructively reviewing the performance of individuals and teams, giving feedback and identifying further action
Rewarding and recognising where performance expectations are met or exceeded

The role of managers and supervisors in the success of any performance management programme cannot be underestimated, here they play the role of coach, reviewer, supporter, investigator and motivator, and as much time should be spent developing them to deliver a performance management process as is spent with their teams.

The role of competencies

Competencies, or behaviours lie at the heart of any successful performance management process.  Competencies and competency frameworks enable an organisation to say how an employee should perform their task, and sits alongside the formal objectives that need to be met - what needs to get done.

By reviewing an organisations values, mission, vision and culture it is possible to draw out those elements that say "if we behave like this when we are at work, we are more likely to meet our goals".
